Work Sucks, I Know

By Reid JS on June 28, 2024

Would you rather have a steady job or win the lottery? Before you say "lottery," did you know that lottery winners often become depressed? Working a job has a nice routine to it. Show up, attend some meetings, answer some slacks, do some work, get some drinks with your coworkers. It's nice to have a status, title, and a shared purpose. I didn't win the lottery, but I'm taking some time off work and it's not as easy as I thought it'd be.

“The years go by fast but the days go by so slow.”

This is a first world problem, but what are you supposed to do when your basic needs are covered? I spent my Monday organizing, deep cleaning, and renovating my apartment. My fridge is stocked, I'm healthy, and my bills are paid. WTF am I supposed to do now?

Maybe I should take a gap year and bum around Asia, sign up for pottery classes, that kind of thing. I’m old and my lower back hurts, so that doesn't sound too fun to me.

Maybe I should hop right into the next job. When I found out about my layoff, I scrambled and lined up an interview at a healthcare IT company. I had second thoughts and I cancelled the interview. It felt like I was rebounding after a breakup lol.

So which would you choose, day job or no day job? ✌️
